Whananaki Snorkel Day

Whananaki Snorkel Day - Waitangi Weekend

Published: Sun 1 Feb 2026, 9:45am

Looking for something to add to your Waitangi Weekend plans? A free, whānau-friendly snorkelling experience is heading to Otamure Bay, Whananaki, offering the perfect chance to get in the water and explore what’s just beneath the surface.

Whananaki resident Samara Nicholas is widely regarded as a community treasure, with her long-standing commitment to people and place reaching well beyond the coast (listen out for a much-anticipated interview with Samara this Saturday at 9am on WhananakiFM), while the kaupapa itself is being delivered by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust.

Happening next week, the snorkel experience falls neatly into the Waitangi Day weekend- an easy fit for locals, visiting whānau, and anyone already enjoying summer on the coast. A free BBQ will also be provided by the wonderful team at the Whananaki Community Led Development Trust, rounding out the day as a relaxed, family-friendly outing.

The day has been designed to be welcoming and accessible, particularly for those who may not feel confident in the water. With experienced guides on hand, participants will be supported to safely explore the reef and learn more about the marine life that lives along the Whananaki coast.

The snorkel experience will run from 10am to 3pm, with free snorkel gear provided, including wetsuits, masks, snorkels and fins. Participants are also welcome to bring their own gear if they prefer. The day is suitable for ages four and up, making it an easy summer activity for families.

Otamure Reef is home to a variety of familiar coastal species, and for many locals this will be a rare chance to see what’s happening beneath the surface of a place they walk past every day.

The event is proudly supported by Water Safety New Zealand and Whangārei District Council, helping ensure the experience remains free and accessible for the community.
