Hikurangi Museum Open Day

Hikurangi Museum Open Day Welcomes Community Back
The Hikurangi Museum is inviting locals and visitors to its annual Open Day on Saturday, March 28 – and everyone is welcome.
The museum will open from 9.30am to 3pm, giving people the chance to explore local history, meet volunteers and see what’s new. Best of all, entry is free, so visitors can drop in at any time during the day.
Tours, Activities and Morning Tea
There will be plenty happening throughout the day. Museum tours will run regularly, helping visitors learn more about Hikurangi’s past and the stories behind the displays.
Meanwhile, families can enjoy arts and crafts activities between 11.30am and 2pm, making the event fun for all ages. Morning tea will also be hosted at the Hikurangi Fire Station from 10.30am to 11.30am, offering a chance to slow down and catch up with others.
Months of Work Behind the Scenes
The Open Day follows a busy period for museum volunteers. During January, a small but dedicated group spent hundreds of hours cleaning, sorting and reorganising artefacts. Because of this work, the museum closed for much of the month so the team could focus on refreshing the displays.
The project began with a blessing led by Whaea Ani in the old Council Building. Since then, volunteers have worked steadily to present Hikurangi’s stories more clearly. Organisers say the work is only just beginning, however they are proud of how much has already been achieved.
A Chance to See the Changes
The Open Day gives visitors the opportunity to see those changes firsthand and support the people who keep local history alive. Whether you visit often or have never stepped through the doors before, the museum team hopes you’ll come along.
