Whananaki Emergency Services Centre
The Whananaki Emergency Services Centre is a cornerstone of emergency response on the Tutukaka Coast, integrating the Whananaki Volunteer Fire Brigade, First Response Unit, and Civil Defence. This volunteer-driven force plays a crucial role in safeguarding the community by providing fire protection, medical first response, and disaster preparedness.
The centre is notable for being the first rural fire service in New Zealand to train as medical first responders. This training, which includes advanced first aid, defibrillator use, oxygen administration, and the ability to administer certain medications, enables the team to offer critical care while waiting for an ambulance. With the nearest ambulance station over 45 minutes away, the ability to respond to medical emergencies has been invaluable to the isolated community.
In addition to fire and medical response, the centre is also a key part of Civil Defence efforts, ensuring the community is prepared for natural disasters and large-scale emergencies. The dedicated volunteers of the Whananaki Emergency Services Centre demonstrate the power of community collaboration and commitment, providing essential services that make a real difference in times of crisis.
