Whananaki Beach Residents & Ratepayers Association (WBRRA)

The Whananaki Beach Residents and Ratepayers Association (WBRRA) is an incorporated society that serves as a key voice for the Whananaki community. As an independent body, it manages essential community assets including the Whananaki Hall and the Emergency Services Centre.

Membership is open to all residents and ratepayers in the Whananaki area. The committee is made up of dedicated volunteers who are elected each Easter at the Annual General Meeting.

Although the WBRRA works closely with both Whangarei District Council and Northland Regional Council, it operates independently and is recognised as a significant representative voice for the community.

Objectives

  • To manage and maintain the Association’s assets ~ including the community hall, Emergency Services Centre, security cameras, and five lifesaving defibrillators.

  • To represent the community in discussions with local authorities.

  • To maintain and improve local amenities by liaising with the appropriate agencies.

  • To support community events and fundraising initiatives.

  • To ensure local priorities are included in long-term council and government planning.

Community Impact

WBRRA has been actively involved in a wide range of local initiatives, including:

  • Working with authorities on roading, signage, and rubbish disposal.

  • Installing toilets at key beaches during the summer season.

  • Maintaining the footbridge, strengthening sea walls, and protecting historic sites such as the wharf and old settler’s cemetery.

  • Securing consent from the Regional Council to manage mangrove spread in the estuary.

  • Installing security cameras and raising funds for five defibrillators across the district.

  • Supporting Civil Defence, First Aid, and the Volunteer Fire Force, all of which are based at the Emergency Services Centre.

Through these efforts, the WBRRA plays a central role in maintaining and enhancing the Whananaki area. The Association reflects the strength of a community working together to protect, support, and shape its own future.
