Motutara Recreation Reserve Walk – Whananaki, Northland
A scenic coastal walk that’s perfect for a short outdoor escape, the Motutara Recreation Reserve Walk sits between Russell and Whangārei in the Whananaki area of Northland. The track offers approximately 3.4 km return along easy-to-intermediate terrain, taking about 1 hour 40 minutes to complete at a relaxed pace.
Begin your walk in Whananaki village, where the track starts at the base of a hill off Rockell Bay Road. The first section takes you across open farmland and past a campground before you enter the reserve itself. Once inside, you’re free to explore coastal headlands and small secluded beaches, with fine views and informal routes along the way.
This walk is known for its coastal scenery, quiet atmosphere and access to fishing and diving spots, making it a great choice for families, visitors and locals looking for a leisurely nature experience.
