Matapōuri Bay

Matapōuri Bay ~ Often seen as the crown jewel of the Tutukaka Coast, Matapōuri Bay is a stunning crescent of golden sandy beach and crystal‑clear water, backed by native bush and dramatic headlands. It’s a top spot for swimming, coastal walks, and exploring rock pools, with excellent snorkeling and fishing off the rocky points when the sea is calm. Because the bay opens to the Pacific, large easterly swells can bring strong currents and dumping waves, especially near the river mouth and rocks, so always check conditions before heading in.
