Matapouri Hall – Community Hall on the Tutukaka Coast
Matapouri Hall is a welcoming and well-loved community hub on the Tutukaka Coast, providing a versatile space for events, gatherings, and local activities in a beautiful coastal setting.
Originally established by the local community in 1912, the hall has long played an important role in bringing people together. In its early days, it hosted dances and social events, with attendees travelling from nearby areas like Whananaki and Ngunguru by horse and boat. During wartime, the hall became a central place for farewells and homecoming celebrations, reflecting its deep connection to the community.
The current hall, built in the 1970s based on a Keith Hays design, continues this legacy today. Over the years it has hosted a wide range of uses, including community groups, church services, polling booths, New Year celebrations, and local events.
A new Roll of Honour was unveiled in 2014, recognising those who served, thanks to the dedication of local residents and volunteers.
Managed by the Matapouri Hall Society Incorporated, the hall remains an important part of community life — a space designed to support connection, sustainability, and the unique spirit of the Matapouri area.
