Whānau Āwhina Plunket – Hikurangi
Whānau Āwhina Plunket is a long-standing part of whānau support in Aotearoa, working alongside families during the earliest and most important stages of a child’s life. In Hikurangi, Plunket provides practical, trusted support to parents and caregivers as they find their feet with pēpi and young tamariki.
The focus is simple: helping babies get the best possible start, supporting caregivers with knowledge and confidence, and making sure families feel connected rather than isolated. Early support can make a real difference, and Plunket is there to walk alongside whānau through those first years.
Plunket services are free and delivered as part of the Well Child / Tamariki Ora programme, which offers regular health checks and guidance from infancy through early childhood. Visits are carried out by registered Plunket nurses, with a set of core check-ins spaced across a child’s early development.
Families can also access extra support when they need it – including help with sleep and settling, feeding and breastfeeding, smoke-free support, and starting solids. These services are designed to respond to real-life challenges, not just tick boxes.
Hikurangi is home to a local Plunket clinic, right in the heart of the community. A community Plunket nurse is available for appointment-based visits on Wednesdays, providing a familiar and accessible point of support for local whānau.
Plunket continues to be an important part of Hikurangi’s support network – helping parents feel supported, informed, and confident as they care for their tamariki.
