Features

Māori Wardens – Hikurangi

Māori Wardens are a trusted and familiar presence around Hikurangi, quietly supporting people and helping things run smoothly when it matters most. While they’re not police, Wardens do have recognised responsibilities and work alongside whānau, community groups, marae, and agencies to provide care, guidance, and reassurance.

Locally, Hikurangi Māori Wardens are often seen at community events, local marae, and situations where extra support or traffic control is needed. They’re always in uniform when out in public, and if you’re unsure, stressed, or in need of help, they actively encourage people to approach them.

Their support is practical and people-focused. This can include helping vulnerable rangatahi and kaumātua, assisting with food parcels, providing transport in their community van, supporting OSCAR programmes, or offering supervision and security when required. Their strength comes from knowing the area, knowing the people, and being part of the community they serve.

The Hikurangi group is part of the wider Tai Tokerau Māori Wardens network, with around 12 local members. They operate as an official, government-recognised entity and a registered charitable trust. Meetings are held monthly and are designed to fit around members’ schedules, usually during the day, with locations advised on contact and often based around Whakapara.

New members are welcome. Young people under 18 can attend alongside a current Warden, while anyone aged 18 and over can attend independently. To become a warranted Māori Warden, a police vetting process is required.

Over recent weeks alone, Hikurangi Māori Wardens have been active across multiple local meetings and events, reflecting just how embedded they are in the life of the district. Their presence continues to be an important part of keeping Hikurangi connected, supported, and looking after its people.
