Hikurangi Community Development Group
The Hikurangi Community Development Group exists to help turn local ideas into real, on-the-ground projects that support the long-term future of the village. It grew out of strong community conversations about where Hikurangi is heading and how locals want to see the place develop over time.
Following extensive community input and planning work, a shared vision for Hikurangi was set through the Placemaking Plan. To help move those ideas forward, the community backed the creation of a dedicated Development Group, along with a paid Community Development Coordinator role to support action, momentum, and connection.
The Coordinator works closely with local groups and residents, helping to get projects started, manage funding applications, support events, provide administration assistance, and act as a bridge between the community, Council, and government agencies. The Development Group provides guidance and oversight to ensure this work stays aligned with community priorities.
The group itself is made up of representatives from key local organisations that play an active role in Hikurangi life:
Together, these organisations bring local insight and a shared commitment to the village. Members meet regularly with the Coordinator to review progress, set priorities and share community feedback.
Many projects begin with a simple idea from a resident, club or local group. The Development Group helps guide these ideas, with the Community Development Coordinator as the first point of contact.
At its core, the Hikurangi Community Development Group ensures local voices are heard and community-led projects have the support they need to succeed.
